Whats up with the PageRank?
Woohoo…this shall be my first rant. Let me rant so to get this blog christian-ed with some good ol’ women bitching. Pardon the language but I am super damn pissed with all these google lowering the pageranks of some respectable blogs. Decent blogs who got hit are the victims.
What’s up with me? My blog has a page rank of a shameful number and why am I complaining? In the world of the ya-ya sista-hoods, we da sista’s and occasionally, the bruthers, who support the sistas, of bloggers stick together through thick and thin. So, if anyone of us gets hit, everyone start forming a mob and hit back.
Pagerank to most is very important because no one wants their blog to be read by no one but themselves. It is rather asinine. If you want to formulate your written thoughts in private where no one will find out, then go get yourself a diary, not have a blog. Blogs are meant for people who wants to communicate with people. Though some would say that they don’t mind if no one reads their blogs. Pardon me but I think, that’s a whole lot of bull!!
People generally seek and crave attention. They want to be popular. It is human nature. Everyone seeks to be famous. Blogging allows even the terribly shy individuals a platform where they can be who they are with no inhibition since there is no need to show your face if you choose not to. Since blogs are essentially represented by humans and as human nature goes, attention and popularity are pretty much an important factor. Therefore, a drop in your pagerank may indicate that you are not as popular as you thought you were or less sought after since its also human nature that people tend to flock to those who are popular. Just take a look at a celebrity and you will know what I am talking about.
So, even if you are blogging for the sake of blogging, a drop in your pagerank will have some effect on you. However, the most hit or the bloggers that feel the pinch most are those who blog for money. Granted that you started out blogging to stay sane or for the fun of it, when you start making money from your blog, your entire perception about blogging changes. Pagerank becomes the source of sleepness nights as it will affect your revenue since some advertisers use pagerank as a benchmark of how popular your blog is or there will be less paid post opportunities to choose from out in the paid post market. So, this pagerank thing, is important not to lose for those who blog for money.
Now we know the reason why a blogger’s pagerank is so important, what can we do to prevent further decline in our pagerank (if you have been affected by it) or what can we do to get back the pagerank that we were comfortable with? Frankly, there isn’t. No one knows how or why? We can only speculate. Google doesn’t announce a formula or a scoring system where your blog has to satisfy this, this and that to earn this and that pagerank. It is like Pentagon or something. Like the virtual tsunami, comes all of a sudden and wipes out everyone clean. Some barely surviving while some were lucky enough to come out unscathed. Most lost their livelihood and have to start from scratch.
So, now, can you see why I am pissed? Some of my fellow bloggers who have been making a decent living from their blogs are now left to fend for themselves and scrape whatever that is left. Worst is some even don’t want to be associated with some blogrolls for fear of a domino effect i.e if you are linked to an affected blog, your blog may be affected as well. That is just plain prejudice. Its like being scared of an AIDS victim if you sit near him. Come on? Do you lack in confidence so much that you would resort leaving your pal to save your own skin? Blogging is supposed to be a fun way of socialising and interacting plus earning some extra cash to spend (for most but if you quit your job to blog for money full-time then sorry la, I don’t have an opinion on this. I rather not). Don’t we already have so much pretentiousness in our everyday life that just because of money, it has to be that way in the blogsphere as well? Call me a naive noob, I don’t care. I honestly don’t know what is the social etiquette of the blogsphere. All I know is, blog because you love to blog. When your focus shifts to money, things like pageranks will get you down if they are not favourable to you. The only way is to be strong and independent. Find ways to overcome this pagerank issue. Don’t abandon those who have been there for you.
