New shoes for the new year
Coincidentally, both Gnat and I got new shoes for the coming Chinese New Year. It wasn’t intentional though. I mean, traditionally, for the us, the Chinese New Year is celebrated with new clothes, shoes and…basically everything on you has to be new, un-worn. I guess it has something to do with literally beginning the year brand new. Hence, the words “New Year”.
So, in addition to shopping for cookies and food stuff to serve your guests during the festivity, you’d be shopping for new clothes and shoes. This is especially so for the kids but not so for the adults. As long as we have a new t-shirt, it’s already good enough. No, no reason – just that being adults, the thrill of wearing something new is gone, passe. As long as we have one new item (big or small, it doesn’t matter) for the new year, that’ll generally suffice. Sometimes, if there wasn’t time or if we didn’t see anything we like, we’d just end up wearing our old clothes. No big deal. And I can’t count how many times I’ve done that – wear old clothes or shoes on the first day of the new year.
However, this year we did our fair share of shopping. Since Gnat was able to take 2 weeks off from work last December, we took advantage of his time off to shop for stuff. And, on top of matching Monkey t-shirts for the 3 of us, both Gnat and I ended up getting new shoes too. I got a pair of comfortable Birkies while Gnat got himself merrell shoes.
I can’t believe how complete our family will be when we turn up on the first day of the new year LOL…Of course, there will also be plenty of photographing as well. Hmm…I think I mentioned that already. But I am kind of excited at the prospect. Can you tell? I mean, big family gatherings are pretty rare these days. Plus, where my side of the family is concerned, my grandma has 9 kids. So, I am sure you can imagine the number of people that comprised the following generation and the generation after that. It’s huge…it’s gonna be huge. I am hoping and praying I don’t screw it up – photography wise that is. You have to wish me all the luck in the world. *keeping my fingers crossed*

i love big family gatherings! and there´s nothing better than to celebrate the new year with the loved ones… i like this tradition of wearing new clothes for the new year – we need to incorporate it in the west! in my family we have this tradition that the way you behave on new year´s will set the tone for the whole year. it´s great excuse to keep your kids in line! well, at least for one day…
