The Best You’ve Ever Had

I am not talking about your sex partner. I am talking about food. Which was the best that you’ve ever had? I have had a lot but unfortunately, it is difficult for me to explain or even describe to most people the kind of dishes that I like because they are mainly home-cooked food by my mom and grandmother.
The women from my paternal grandmother’s side are extremely good cooks. Possibly due to the fact that my grandparents were poor and didn’t have much money to afford luxuries like going out to eat. Everything was home-made and home-cooked. My grandmother would cook meals from her family recipes that were with her family for generations. Soon after she got married, she learned new recipes from her multi-racial neighbours and incorporated them into her everyday cooking. Her daughters and daughter-in-laws learned from her.
Even when I was a kid, my family hardly ever ate out. Even processed food were not encouraged. I would always jump for joy whenever my dad says that we were going out for a meal. Ah..a respite from home-cooked food for a change. I used to think that the food outside at a restaurant for instance was far tastier than what my mom has on the table everyday. My mom would say that my naive view will change when I grow up. How true and accurate she was. When I started working and ate out almost everyday for lunch, I hated it. Even more so when I got married. Eating someone else’s cooking just doesn’t measure up to my mom’s or my grandmother’s. I would look forward to the weekends, Sundays to be more exact cos that is when I get to savour my mom’s food. They are simply heavenly.
I tend to think that my grandmother’s recipes have gone almost extinct with my generation. For one, I hardly cook nowadays. Even if I did cook, the meals are usually from the various cookbooks that I bought every now and then when I go shopping. Of course, there are certain dishes which I personally love and learned how to cook them. Am I going to share the recipes with you? No way, Jose. I don’t kiss and tell *wink*.
